Improving your protection in 2022

15 February 2022

In 2022, there are many ways to protect yourself at home or when out and about. Being confronted by an intruder in your own home is a terrifying prospect - but how far are you allowed to go to protect yourself and others?

What is the law on protecting your home?

While the CPS and the police urge people to always ensure their first port of call is to alert the police - should you be able to do so - there is advice on ways to protect yourself and your home while staying on the right side of the law when defending yourself or your family if an unwanted trespasser is in your property.

You need to approach your personal protection and security in a multi-level but proportionate manner

Using the following approach Deter, Detect, Delay & Engage

Deter

We can deter in many ways this can be as little as the positive way that we conduct ourselves whilst walking. The boundaries of our property being clearly defined and secure. We can place signs that warn of “dogs running free”. We can ensure that expensive vehicles are not visible from the road/entrance. We can have a well-trained protection dog that walks in such an obedient manner it telegraphs that you own a trained body guard dog.

Detect

Crime prevention by the use of good CCTV is most homeowners fallback position when it comes to defending their home. That combined with a house alarm. There are credible motion alert alarms available on the market professionally installed that come in under £1000 plus vat. A trained protection dog will also detect and alert the presence of someone approaching your property

Delay

Secure locks with good resistance times always help. Retractable posts that can be fitted to driveways to prevent vehicle ingress. Secured by design used to be a phrase commonly used, so if you are building your own home, garage, etc give some thought to the layout. Think through the worst case scenario’s. i.e.

  1. Where in your property would you retreat to with your family if you knew someone had forced an entry downstairs?
  2. Where would be a good choke point to defend against multiple intruders.

Again, a well trained protection dog assists your delay protocol

Engage

In the worst-case scenario of violent crime and/or burglary you may have to defend yourself and your loved ones. Try and ensure the police are on their way where possible. You may use such force as is reasonable to avert danger. This is an objective statement and taken on the merits of the situation but ultimately you have to survive the encounter, so this can cover a range of use of force from shouting through to lethal force.

Will you have to answer questions as to why you have done what you’ve done? Yes of course, but this shouldn’t deter you from defending yourself.
