How protection dogs could have saved the day

15 November 2022

The recent news that someone broke into the home of the US Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi was shocking and scary, but the scenario whereby a famous or well-known person has been targeted is nothing new.

Physical attacks

From politicians and celebrities to footballers, there are increasing stories of criminals who have either attacked them in public or entered their home. In some scenarios, there have even been family present in the home who have felt extremely threatened by the situation.

Protection in the home, it appears, is an important topic, but what’s the best solution?

Attack deterrents

There are various forms of protection that we can use, from weapons to CCTV and alarm systems - but there’s only one form of protection that provides the highest level of protection, and that’s using a trained protection dog.

At this point, you might be wondering what’s wrong with the other options. Let’s take a look at them closer…

CCTV and alarm systems can deter criminals, but they can be beaten. Cameras, for example, have blind spots and they don’t react to a situation by defending you against a face-to-face encounter. It’s also difficult to identify intruders on camera as they can easily hide their faces and any other identifying marks.

Weapons, however, can act as a last line of defence, but that scenario should be avoided at all costs - and the use of a weapon carries additional risks. A 17-year-old was recently jailed for stabbing an intruder who entered their home. Whether it’s justice or injustice, having a weapon carries the risk of being prosecuted if it’s not used correctly.

There is, however, a better solution…

A trained protection dog is a powerful way to deter someone from breaking in. Their large, physical presence is enough to make anyone think twice, as a strong powerful Alsatian with powerful teeth is not a welcome encounter.

This also highlights the second benefit. Even if someone breaks into a home, a fully trained protection dog knows how to deal with various scenarios, including the possibility of the homeowner coming face to face with them.

In this scenario, the trained protection dog is able to handle the situation better than a homeowner with a kitchen knife or golf club. The defensive moves of the protection dog can buy valuable minutes for the homeowner to escape to safety.
