We often get asked what the difference is between a watchdog and a personal protection dog and while it might not seem like a big thing, there is actually a huge difference.

What is a watch dog?

Watchdogs (often referred to as security dogs) are used to act as a deterrent when protecting a building such as a warehouse or a depot. They typically have basic training, and their utility is to scare off anyone wannabe thieves looking to steal goods.

A watchdog will also use repetitive barking as a deterrent which can often be unreliable and limited in its use.

What's the difference between a watch dog and a protection dog?

Personal protection dogs on the other hand are fully trained German Shepherds, or other breeds, that know how to deal more intelligently in dangerous situations. They protect individuals as their top priority which can include protection in the home, at work or even when travelling. Protection dogs are highly trained and we match the family with the dog as all personalities (human and canine) are different.

What makes a great personal K9 bodyguard?

When it comes to having the right personal K9 bodyguard, there are two key elements that we use to make sure you are fully protected.

First, is the right training. All of our protection dogs go through rigorous training and are monitored to make sure that they are up to the job of protecting our clients.

Training includes how to pacify an intruder, how to follow complex commands and how to deal with an intruder or an aggressor differently depending on the circumstances.

The level of training we provide is a lot different to watchdogs that are trained to follow basic commands such as sit or attack (often with little thought into what the attack consists of).

Our personal protection dogs are also subject to ongoing training to make sure that they are at the top of their game when it comes to providing personal protection. We have a range of online courses with personal support to help our clients with training throughout the life of the dog.

The second key element to having the right level of personal protection is the breed of a dog.

We provide trained German Shepherds because the German Shepherd is a highly intelligent breed of dog that can be trained to the right level. It also knows and understands better how to react to different situations, and who is the aggressor.

Watchdogs are typically more muscle dogs that can be dangerous and aren’t the best fit when it comes to personal protection. They can also be turned by the aggressor as they don’t have the high level of loyalty that exists with a German Shepherd.

Other reasons why we use German Shepherds include the size and physical presence and their keen sense of smell and hearing.
